The woman caught my eye because of her jerking dance, not for what she wasn’t wearing. Arms erratic, flailing over and under her head, she ran in circles, from kerb to cobbled street and back to kerb. After it became clear she wasn’t having a fit, I noticed she’d doffed all but her panties. (I was, it must be said, far down the block.) A couple of men who knew her stood nearby, chattily making snaps: an art project perhaps, something edgy for the return to classes. The self-conscious, attention-hungry presentation of the event suggested art, anyway, and her carefully chopped, on-trend, ginger-dyed hair, suggested art student. But when she donned a new, royal blue track jacket backwards, the gigantic Adidas leaf emblazoned on her chest, I began to suspect marketing gimmicks.
